Marriage and the Bible

4/4/2013:

Are we viewing the marriage in a Biblical way?

Are we viewing the marriage in a Biblical way?

Marriage is a beautiful thing.  The glistening of tearful eyes as the rings slid onto the other’s finger.  The overwhelming joy and butterflies in one’s heart.  It is a beautiful thing.  However, no marriage is perfect.  No marriage is faultless.   We must remember that this is the joining of two separate humans.  A man and woman who chose to become one.  Every marriage there will be clashes, arguments and thoughts of divorce.  I have been married for thirteen years, and yes, many a times I cried and thought heavily about divorcing my husband.  However, a little voice always told me, “That is not my plan for you.”

It is time to go deep into this topic.  I did a lot of studying here and found what the Bible says fascinating.

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. (ESV)

Whoa, big verse there.  This verse is telling women to submit to their husbands.  Now, in today’s thoughts, it is telling a woman “Hey, you are now a rug for your husbands.” Uh… so wrong.  So you out there, stop thinking with today’s terminology.   Lets read and look into the word submit more.

God created men and women with different roles.  It is stated very clearly in the Bible:

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him
a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the
field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would
call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The
man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the
field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its
place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a
woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
Genesis 2:18-23 (NIV)

Now, man was created to be the head of the house.

For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the
head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
Ephesians 5:23 (NIV)

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the
head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
1 Corinthians 11:3(NIV)

Woman was created to be the helper.

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone;
I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:18(NIV)

The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every
beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
Genesis 2:20(NIV)

So, does this sound like a woman should be a doormat?  No.  She is there to be your loving right hand.  She is there just as the church is there for Christ.  Our savior would never hurt his church, so why should a man hurt his wife?  Or mistreat her?

Ok, now, marriage is a two way street.  Man was created to exercise loving authority over woman.  They are not to make their wife feel like she is worthless, but loved and wanted. Men, would your wife respond well to an order like; “Hey, get me a drink, ugly!”  Most of you probably snickered over that one, thinking your wife would respond hostility.  When my husband demands something, nine times out of ten, I fum and growl and shout “GET IT YOURSELF!”  The loving way to ask your wife for something is, “Hun, could you get me a drink, please?”  Now… a wife would be more likely to get you your drink.  I know I would.

Again, marriage is a two way street, women, we were made to be man’s helper.  A man can not be a great man with out his helper.  It is the way God planned it.  However, do not believe that you are the one who must lead the man.  We were made to be the helper and the ones who carry new life (babies) not to be the one who dominates the house.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather,
she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve …
1 Timothy 2:12-13 (NIV)

A woman is suppose to be a helper.  She is important to man and God.  If treated right, she will blossom.  If you mistreat her, you will loose her.  If you are too kind to her, she will use you and throw you away.  God tells man to be the leader, so be the leader.  Women look up to that.  However, if you ‘bend over backwards’ and give her everything that she wants (not needs, but wants) you will spoil her and she may leave you thinking she is too good… or she may try to dominate over you… whatever.  God calls men to be the leader, and the woman is the helper.

For man was not made from woman, but woman from man.
1 Corinthians 11:8 (NIV)

And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he
made into a woman and brought her to the man.
Genesis 2:22(NIV)

Now, a beautiful marriage is written in the Bible as this:

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the
head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
1 Corinthians 11:3(NIV)

Lets look at what we said in a different life…

The head of Christ, is God.  Just like the head of every woman, is the man.  Jesus died on the cross but not because he wanted to.  Oh, no… but because God told him too.

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”  Mathew 26:39 (ESV)

Jesus died to glorify God.  To cleanse us of our sin.  The Bible does not ask us women to do anything the Jesus would not do, does it?

Men, in the Bible you are told to be loving towards your wives.  God was loving and still is loving to Christ, right?  Jesus rose from the dead and was able to go back to his Father in heaven, which is a wonderful wonderful display of love.
